The independent feature film “Dermaphoria” is scheduled to start its 19-day shoot this weekend in New Orleans, which should give local “Vampire Diaries” fans something to be excited about. That’s because it will mark a return to town of Joseph Morgan, one of the stars of the CW Network’s supernatural drama as well as of the New Orleans-set spinoff “The Originals.”
Morgan joins Walton Goggins (“Django Unchained,” “G.I. Joe: Retaliation”), Ron Perlman (“Sons of Anarchy,” “Pacific Rim”) and newcomer Nicole Badaan in the cast of “Dermaphoria,” which is being written, directed and co-produced by first-time helmer Ross Clarke, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The film is a thriller, based on the novel of the same name by Craig Clevenger, which THR says has been likened to a cross between “Memento” and “Breaking Bad.” It tells the story of an experimental chemist — played by Morgan — who wakes up in jail with a case of amnesia and criminal charges filed against him related to an illegal LSD-manufacturing ring. When he is unexpectedly released from jail, he finds himself on the run against bad guys who want his formula and cops who want him in jail — all while he hunts for his missing girlfriend.
“Dermaphoria” is being produced through Keep the Car Running and Upload Films. No distribution deal has been announced.
Morgan was previously in New Orleans to shoot a back-door pilot for “The Originals.” That pilot aired in April and has since been picked up for a full season by the CW, with a premiere episode expected to be shot this summer.
